Tryouts begin for all players that are cleared to participate.
** The golf course will only allow me to bring out 16 players each day. I will contact you to let you know when your tryout will be. Do Not show up to the course unless I have contacted you. **
Dress: All players must be properly dressed to tryout for the Arcadia Golf Team. Players must wear appropriate dress shorts or pants and a collared shirt. Players must wear a belt. If wearing a hat, you need to wear it properly with the bill facing forward. Any player that is not dressed appropriately will be sent home.
To Participate in Athletics:
1) All participants need to have an A.I.A. physical on file with the Athletic Director’s office. The physical must be done after March 1, 2018 to be used for the 2018-2019 season and also must be signed by a medical doctor.
2) All participants must have passed all classes from the previous quarter, or made up the same number of failed classes in summer school. (Summer school classes do not have to be the same as those failed.)
3) All participants must pay a participation fee prior to issuance of game equipment. In order to participate in District organized athletics, students and their parents must view the online Parent consent Sports Injury Video prior to participation and fill out the appropriate paperwork in the Athletic Directors office.
Practice and Tryouts will be held at Arizona Country Club
Practice starts at 3:00pm - unless noted.
All players trying out will have to demonstrate their skill level on the driving range before they are allowed out on the course. You will be asked to hit to targets of various distances, with the club of your choice. Any player that can’t perform this task with reasonable success will not be allowed on the course.
Players who advance to the course will have 9 holes to show what they can do.
Players who post the target score or below will be asked back to play again. Returning players are exempt from being cut the first week.
The team will consist of approximately the top 8 players at Arcadia High School and the remaining will be kept for development for future seasons. Arizona high school golf is Varsity only. There are no Junior Varsity or Freshman teams allowed by the Arizona Interscholastic Association.
All players must be proficient in the USGA Rules of golf.
Selection Process
My main job is to select the players that I believe have the best chance to compete for a State Championship this year and in the future. With that said, players will selected by the following criteria.
You may borrow a used bag for free. You must return it at the end of the season in good condition.*
You will need to provide your own golf balls for practice. Balls for matches and tournaments will be provided. Our team golf balls are Titleist Pro V1 & Pro V1X. If you want to use a different brand of golf balls, you will have to provide those on your own.
Players with tournament experience have a greater chance to make the team. Learning to deal with the pressures of tournament golf can only be gained with playing tournaments. There are many opportunities to play through the Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA). www.JGAA.org

Selection Process
My main job is to select the players that I believe have the best chance to compete for a State Championship this year and in the future. With that said, players will selected by the following criteria.
- All seniors must show the ability to play in the starting 5 by the end of the season to be selected for the team.
- You will be evaluated on scores, course management, technique, attitude and potential for growth.
- Tournament experience and scores will be taken into account when selecting the team.
- Golf is a game of honor. Any player that is caught intentionally breaking the rules will be immediately removed from the tryouts and the team.
When players are of equal ability:
- Returning players will be selected before new players.
- Freshman will be chosen before Sophomores.
- Sophomores will be chosen before Juniors.
- Juniors will be chosen before Seniors.
In essence, the younger you are, the greater your chance to make the team.

RULES of Titan golf
Arcadia Varsity Boys Golf
The purpose of the Arcadia Varsity Boys Golf program is to provide the student athletes with an instructional golf experience consistent with standards set by Arcadia High School and the Scottsdale School District. We will always exhibit pride and sportsmanship. All goals, expectations, and philosophies will be derived from our purpose.
Expectations and Philosophies
1. Consistent with school and district policy, any use of alcohol, tobacco, or drugs may result in the immediate dismissal from the golf team.
2. Al players will dress in an appropriate manner while on the golf course. This includes practices and matches. The appropriate uniform is to include a collared shirt, golf appropriate shorts or pants, belt and shoes. Hats that are worn must have the bill facing forward. The golf team issued hat will be worn at all matches and tournaments.
3. Punctuality to practice and matches is an absolute must. If a student athlete is not on time, I believe that they are not ready to perform. If there is an appropriate reason for the absence (test, appointment, etc.), please notify me in advance. My cell phone number is 602-622-5906.
4. Any player missing practice because of illness must contact me prior to practice.
5. Practice sessions and matches are open to parents and relatives. All observers must follow proper protocol by not communicating with the athletes and checking in with me prior to the event. Golf carts will not be available for practice.
6. A coaches and parent conference can occur if a situation or circumstance concerning a student athlete arises. Please email or call to set up a meeting. My email address is [email protected] or call 602-622-5906.
7. Student athletes are expected to remain eligible throughout the golf season and the school year. I reserve the right to dismiss, take away playing time and/or discipline any student athlete who does not perform adequately in the classroom.
8. Attitude is Everything! Student athletes are expected to maintain and demonstrate a positive, team oriented, teachable and coachable attitude throughout the golf season. Any behavior less than this may result in discipline, lack of playing time, suspension, or dismissal from the team.
9. Any coaching of swing mechanics will only be given at an athletes request. Many players are or have been trained by paid professionals. I do not wish to interfere with any previous lessons. Course management will be taught to all athletes.
10. A physician or the Arcadia trainer must clear a student athlete before returning to competition or practice after an injury.
11. To earn a Varsity Letter in golf, the athlete must attain the required number of points according to the published scale, or meet one of the qualifying standards.
Matches and Tournament Qualifying
In most cases, players will qualify for all spots during practice. Qualifying will consist of the total of the last three qualifying matches. I reserve the right to insert players in a match/tournament when I believe it is in the best interest of the team.
State Championship Team
I will select the 5 players who will participate in the State Championship. I will consider scoring averages, tournament play, experience and all of the above expectations in making my decision on who plays. I will pick the 5 players that I believe will have the best chance for Arcadia High School's success.
Golf is a challenging sport and the pressure these young men put on themselves is extreme. My philosophy is to coach in the most positive manner I can. I know these young men are doing their best and experience tells me that sometimes they will have a bad shot, hole, or even a bad round. I always want them to know that “ They are not their golf score “ and tomorrow is another day. Please remember that while you are out watching your son, I am trying to watch 5 or more players. I’m good, but I can’t be everywhere at once. If the golf gods are on our side, I will be around to help every young man that finds a little difficulty and needs some help. If I happen to be on another part of the course, I trust that our preparation in practice will get them through the situation.
I expect this season to be highly competitive when it comes to qualifying. Although while there is no exact science in picking players, please trust that I will always do what I think is best for the program.
